This book about industrial chemistry circa 1920 has lots of interesting material explained in non-technical fashion. Unfortunately, as is all to often the case with Kindle books, the illustrations are missing.Most of the book is devoted to straightforward explanations of things like alanine dyes and producing ammonia. There are also a lot of time capsule bits reflecting the knowledge and attitudes of a century ago. I was particularly taken with the author's defense of poison gas in war and his description of atomic theory.
But it loses a star for no illustrations.

It is some old stuff but still relevant. If you like history and chemistry this is a great book to get an idea of where to start.

This is a great review of the history of organic chemistry from the civil war to the 1920's. Author places many significiant discoveries, in a proper position in terms of value to society and the influence that the particular item had in changing such society. Although these advancements influenced the politics of the day, the topic is not addressed, thus leaving an easier read to understand the actual chemistry.
